The artist who designed the illustration at left is profiled in this illuminating post at the Top of the Ticket blog at the LA Times.
Born in the US, of Palestinian descent, Firas Alkhateeb, a 20 year old student of history at the University of Illinois, has seen the image he originally created duplicated to meet the rhetorical needs of both sides of the political spectrum.
The unveling of the artist – the work itself has been alive and well on the internet since it’s debut on January 18 – may be more telling of the political atmosphere in the US than is the work itself.
There are those among the American left who either never believed in Obama – and Alkhateeb is one of them – or who never believed in the Democratic party. And these very difficult times only seem to highlight the significance of finding a 20 year old Palestinian-American who was un-willing to follow.
The American right, as wrong as they are on every issue, has shown a willingness to follow its base. The right may be even more wrong as a result, but their own concentrated ignorance allows them to move policy makers and legislation – or to stop it – far better than will an openness and willingness to compromise.

As the Guardian pointed out this morning, “To the extent the hip comic villain portrayed by Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson and finally Heath Ledger could be said to hold any political ideology, he was an anarchist.” I would add, one with strong libertarian leanings.
The American political right is an a-historical animal. It lunges and it grabs at any stick it can reach and it’s willing to swing that stick. It can put the word “Socialism” on the bottom of the poster, or the word “Liberal” in front of the word “Fascism.”
And their ability to win, while giving new poignancy to Orwell’s slogan “Ignorance is Strength,” should also give new impetus to the left’s willingness to shine bright lights on all or any of them – whether directly related to the current debate or not.
With almost no idea what it means to shout “Heil Hitler” at a rally supporting the Israeli state run healthcare system, one could at least conclude that these offensive, neanderthals have no place is a non-Orwellian system of government.
